Bir is on the southeast of Dharamsala and at a distance of about 70 kms Bir at an altitude of 1400 m is connected by NH-20, Pathankot-Manali Highway and approximately midway between Baijnath and Joginder Nagar. The nearest railway station is Ahju, on the narrow-gauge line running between Pathankot and Joginder Nagar via Kangra and Paprola-Baijnath.  There are few Tibetan settlements around Bir.  The Karampa sect of Tibetan Buddhism has built a beautiful temple-cum-monastery  a top a hillock near Bir.
